Betamax - Disco Dracula

Here's an interesting story:

You might remember this little tune back in 2010 that went " Ooooooooooooooooo.... Barbara Streisand" by A-Trak and Armand van Helden. It got heavy radio rotation and dancefloor coverage all over europe (sweden included) and I'm guessing overseas and eastways too. In other words, quite the hit.

Anyway, dutch journalist Edwin van Dalen tweeted something along the lines of "well that's a sample of a cover of a famous tune. Anyone can make a hit by putting some beats over an already famous song" in typical tweet pundit fashion. That was that, and the internet moved on.

Until an EMI product manager, also the label behind the track, replied "ok, so you'll have that hit ready by the end of the year then?". So Edwin seemingly thought, "hey why not?" and made it his little petproject over at the dutch edition of Metro, where he worked. He teamed up with fellow dutchman Riptide for the production, made a weekly blogg about the process and let the Metro-readers vote on which song they should ultimately use. The polls decided on "Soul Dracula" by Hot Blood.

Obviously they didn't meet their "by the end of the year"-deadline. But the song is finished anyway, and has been out on BMKLTSCH for a week or so. And hey, not bad. Not bad at all.

  1. Wonderful you give this release attention, only it is not exactly the way it went. Edwin asked readers of Metro for sugestions of what song he could use for a remix. They got about 100 different songs sended, and he and his partner Max picked "Soul Dracula" themselves. I should know, I was the one who sugested it :-)
It took so long to get it released because it was difficult to chase down the rights of this song. I hope it becomes a big summerhit, all the money made by this release will go to a good cause.

  2. Mmm, thanks for clearing that up! Don't really trust Google translate.
